Martial Arts Shoes

I personally have not tried them yet. I remain barefoot.
Do you wear them?
What benefits do they provide you?
Do you recommend them?
What brand and model?
Are there any secrets to obtaining the ultimate size?
Does wearing them add stress to knee and ankle joints?
All opinions appreciated.

I have tried several brands of MA shoes.(adidas, pinetree, otomix, discipline) The best I've found so far is the discipline brand. I've had three pairs of them. all low tops. They have a built in wedge that helps stabilize your foot. The others did not have this feature and all cost the same, around $70
Pros: They will protect your toes and the bottom of your feet while healing, etc and They look good.
Cons: In our school the whole floor is a mat. The shoes make it very hard to balance and pivot on a mat, which would add stress on the knees and ankles. On a harder surface floor, I think they would be great.

I own a pair of the Discipline MA shoes. Fit great, very light, but as Master Hawk eluded to it was hard for me to pivot when throwing a kick. Too much grip on the mat that then stressed the knee. I have worn them on smoother mats and they worked great. I have not tried them again since the spliting of the PaSaRyu and HapKiDo classes but now that you brought this up I may give it another try. My wife reminds me of these $70 shoes collecting dust in the closet at least once a month.

I don't own any but have been tempted to buy. I've heard people complain about the excessive gripping on the carpet.
It couldn't be any worse than the floor burns and stubbed toes I receive on a regular basis.
