What is your favorite strength training program?
What type of strength training is your favorite and what do you feel is most helpful for your martial arts training?
Weights training, Isometric training, or Resistance training - or something else???
Please share what you do.
I enjoy weight training.
Approaching mid 40's, I still enjoy free weights and like the 10 to 20 rep range.
I find that my joints and tendons get sore and take longer to recover with lower reps (photo is not of me) - so I stick with the higher reps per set. Keeping movements very basic, I focus on slower rep speed and correct form. I have found Nautilus to be easier on the joints however and hope to use them more in coming years.
I've found that training 2 times per week has helped me considerably. I try to keep the sessions fast paced and can get a decent workout in - in 35 to 40 minutes. I'll change it up at times and do a split routine 3 days per week - training each body part only 1x per week in that case.
The biggest challenge I find is being consistent.
Always open for new ideas and suggestion.
Look forward to reading about what your favorite system is.

I use a tiered system, (maybe it has a different name in the weight training world). I start heavy, then a little lighter and then lightest and then repeat. I combine it simultaneously with cardio and agility training. It goes something like this:
I load a 2 piece combination toilet, ADA height, elongated.
I unload and unbox it at the jobsite.
I squat and lift the bowl close to my chest and carry it 50 to 100' in the house. Without pause, I carry it up 3 flights of stairs, including landings, and then proceed another 50' where I gently deposit it on the floor.
I return downstairs and repeat with the toilet tank and then finally the lid (lightest). But, that's not all the fun. I do the same thing in reverse going down the stairs (sometimes more tricky because you can't see your feet) with the funky old toilet. This one (just to work different muscles) I hold away from my chest so as not to get the funk on me.
The tool box, backpack of essentials and wet vac are just icing on the cake.
I consistently do this two to three times per week.
For a more intense workout I will jerk a 50 gallon gas water heater up regular stairs and then lift by rope into the attic access.

Did I mention my back and leg routine consisting of a shovel and 5' deep hole?

Master Crane,
I have to admit, I'm disappointed in your response.
I always assumed with your knowledge of the force, you were able to forgo manual labor:)
Seriously though, I think extra strength and conditioning training for martial arts athletes is very important. However, I don't know how much I would be able to do if I didn't own a facility.
For me personally, 2x per week is not enough to make gains, although it is still better that 1 or 0.
I prefer split routines, no more than 3 sets of 2 different exercises per muscle group. 1 minute rest periods between sets.
A mix of free weight and nautilus works good for me. (I do like the machines alot and I think the notion that free weights are somehow better than machines is nonsense)
I also have found that even though we do alot of conditioning in classes, I still need to push fairly hard on the cardio to get lean.
I think at this stage of the game, most of us know what we need to do, its just a matter of getting it done!
I would love to have a Nautilus. The ones I've used while at the hotels while traveling are incredible. My youngest goes off to college this fall. Perhaps I'll join the gym up the street then(atc fitness) and use theirs.
Well I tried one of your workouts this weekend Master Crane. Replacing Faucets. No real heavy lifting but plenty of stretching, contorting, sit ups, head bumps, and back bruising. Oy! Your line of work does indeed provide a full body workout.
I've hit my desired BMI (body mass index) weight thanks to the training under Master Pryga. Time to ramp up my cardio and weight training however. I encourage everyone to try the nautilus equipment too. It's impressive.
