Looking for tips on how to position striking knife hand to maximize effect.
I'll share my thoughts. Please share yours.
I begin with hand opened wide with 4 fingers held closely together.
Bend thumb and tuck it down pressing it back toward the wrist for tension.
At the same time, extend the pinky finger straight with equal tension - while having the first 3 fingers slightly bent at 1st and 2nd joint.
At this point I can almost hear my hand humming with tension.
Wrist feels more solid with a slight bend outward and upward - also keeps contact point away from pinky and on the meat of the hand.
I'm now ready for a knife hand strike.
Just need to work on making this a natural hand reaction when practicing the entire knife hand strike motion. Much like when we bend our knees and sink into our strikes.

This is good timing for this question as I have been gearing up for our "Heavy Hand" breaking seminar.
I know the way you are describing is generally the way guys do this technique, however, I have found through lots of trial that the knife hand strike works even better if you have your thumb straight and your pinky tucked slightly under. Your hand is almost cupped looking and stays relaxed. This technique does not look so good in forms, etc so that is why I don't stress it. Remember also that when executing this technique on soft target areas on an attacker we sometimes advocate striking with the outer bone of your wrist joint vs your hand.
I see the benefits Master. It feels as though the relaxed hand enables me to achieve increased speed and an overall larger motion resulting in more momentum and force delivered on the target.
I envision the physics of the straight thumb providing a reflection of shock waves back through the hand to the initial strike point too??
Is this hand position similar to a palm strike one would use on a brick or board for breaking?
Looking forward to the board break seminar tomorrow. May have trouble falling asleep tonight.

It is pretty much the same hand position. Just try it both ways next time you get a chance. Again, this is my experience and observation, your milage may vary:)
